For peat-lovers, not fighters, Ardbeg 10yo is probably the highest-quality 'entry-level' single malt on the market, and the distillery many Islay connoisseurs would choose as their favourite. A whirlwind of peat and complex malty flavours, this is an exuberant, in-your-face Whisky to be cherished. It's easy to see why this is so popular - spicy, sweet, and above all smoky. A great dram, well-balanced and with a lot going on.
Smell / Nose
Exceptional balance and depth. At full strength, the aroma is a seductive mix of toffee and chocolate sweetness, cinnamon spice and medicinal phenols. Fresh citrus and floral notes of white wine are evident as are melon, pear drops, general creaminess, fresh phenolic aroma of seaspray (iodine) and smoked fish. Hickory and coffee emerge later as the most volatile top notes fade.
Taste / Palate
An initial moderate and clean sweetness is rapidly followed by a mouthful of deep peat notes, with tobacco smoke and strong espresso coffee, which then gives way to treacle sweetness and liquorice. The mouthfeel is firstly lightly spiced (astringent), then chewing, mouthwatering, full and finally dry.
Long and smoky. A smoky sweetness is left on the palate, with a crushed peat and sweet malted cereal character.
Maybe I'm desensitized to the smoke but this is not nearly as smokey as people say it is. It's very smooth, with a prominent sweetness. It's very earthy (but in a pleasant way), similar to the aroma of when you're raking autumn leaves.
Peat and more peat. Vanilla. Smoke. Long finish. You know your drinking an Ardbeg. Gentle on the mouth for an Islay but you feel it in the back of your throat. Fleeting spices.
Smoke and peat are prominent, giving way to sweet honey finish. What a fascinating combo of flavors. Very engaging. You can't ignore this!
Smoky, gentle, sweet.
The gold standard for peaty whisky...unless you prefer Laphroaig ;)
Smoke...smoke, and more smoke.
smokey, chocolate covered, candied bacon.
Super smoky awesomeness. In my hip flask for my wedding.
Amazing peated Whisky. A great addition to any collection
One of the best intro Islay whiskies on the market.
Smoke, peat and fire! For really men only! One of my favorites.
What a taste!
With a taste that harkens back to the very creation of a lush planet Earth, this one blew my mind.
Somewhere between Laphroaig and Lagavulin. It has the smokey intensity of Laphroaig but not quite. A bit light not too oily quite enjoyable
Best islay I've tasted
The most turf-tasting, phenol rich, peaty whisky ever tasted. Strong but with sweet linger. If you don't rinse the glass afterwards, the smoky smell will hold on for hours!
Natural color. Great peaty flavor. Small vainilla end.
I love the peaty smoke flavor, long finish but no medicine flavor. This is how scotch should be!
Sooo good. Sweeter than Laphroaig Triple Wood, just as smokey. I'm ready to try their other expressions now!
World best whisky
I really like the fruity taste pops out of the peaty, iodiney tastes
It was like drinking a campfire.
Amazing, pure, sweet, smooth, perfect whisky; placing 2nd to my favorite Laphroaig 10yr with a beautiful body and a gorgeous finish. Certainly one of Scotland's best whisky. As Kimmy's beautiful body.
One of my favorite go to bottles
One of Islay's great whiskies!!
My first real peaty scotch and I loved it
Совершенно мужской вид, для серьёзного настроения. Hello, teacher, tell me what's my lesson . Думаю, хотела бы сопоставить с тёмным шоколадом или вяленой рыбой. Для меня загадка
This is the one that converted me from a highland scotch lover to a full on Islay girl. Beautiful balance! Smoke, peat, fruit, smoke, peat and everything in between. Quite an experience! Now my all time favorite .
King of peat.
Powerful! Uncompromising! Characteristic!
Drink it-> grow a beard-> feel like a Viking
This is a great value single malt. Perfect for both the seasoned Islay or novice drinker.
