An authentic Sicilian Amaro from 1868.

It was in the beginning of the 19th century when the Benedictine monks from Sicily crafted the secret recipe for Averna Amaro. In 1868, one of the monks gifted the secret recipe to Salvatore Averna, a textile merchant. He began making it in his family farmhouse and passed it down to his son, Francesco Averna. Everybody knows royals know a good tipple when they see one (and they’re not shy to consume larger-than-average quantities of it, either) and so, it wasn’t long before the royal coat of arms was bestowed upon Arena with the inscription “Royal Household patent” on the bottle. Today, Averna Amaro is owned by Gruppo Campari but it still tells the authentic story of the Italian island it comes from with its unique aromas and flavors of the Meditarranean herbs that grow on the land.

Infused with herbs in Caltanissetta, Sicily, and bottled in the Gruppo Campari plant, Averna Amaro is made after a traditional recipe from 1868. Not much has changed since then. The infusion process is still long AF and combines selected herbs, roots, and natural spices. The ingredients include pomegranates, essential oils of bitters oranges and lemons. And finally, the result is just as mouth-coating and bittersweet with flavors of orange, liquorice, myrtle, juniper berries, rosemary, and sage.
