Reviews and Tasting Notes

Appearance / Color
Deep gold

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The nose is complex, smoky and, earthy. But it's also restrained, with fruity and floral notes.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
It's a campfire smoke extravaganza, but it's also much deeper than that. There's vanilla, caramel, and a pleasant fruitiness in the background. Some spicy oak is also in there.

Top reviews for Alexander Murray Ardmore 9 Year Old 2008:

— This is a very good smoky whisky in the same vein of Laphroaig 10. This has a little more smoke and peat but without as much iodine/medicine. While the medicinal flavor is still there, its smoothed out by some leather and caramel. This is definitely a good whisky that is priced appropriately.

— My first impression was of tree sap and tobacco which was not enjoyable. However I took it slow on the second tasting as enjoyed it more. What I picked up as tree sap was spicy oak, with tobacco, smoke, and caramel also present. There is a fruitiness in there somewhere that perhaps citrus and vanilla. The earthiness is only on the nose for me, but perhaps is expressed as tobacco for me. Because of the tobacco like earthiness, I have a hard time enjoying this on a normal basis. However, I do think this would be a great camping whisky.

— Tobacco and leather flavors. Some body and sweetness. Very good.

Michal
Michal,
I love smokey whiskies. This is the stuff I use to clean my toilet with. Awful. Glad that I got this in the tasting box and not the bottle.

Jason
Jason,
Honestly I hope no one else had the same experience I had with this. I was excited to try it and when it arrived I cracked it open to share with the family. As soon as it my pallet it tasted good, but was quickly followed up by something horrid. My brother-in-law described it best when he said it tasted like a wet bandaid. It was so bad we ended up dumping over half the bottle.

John
John,
A good peaty whisky. Some citrus notes behind the forward peaty. I prefer the OB Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroigs though.

Jordan
Jordan,
Big smoke in the nose, not as smokey flavor wise. Solid oak. Semi sweet lingering finish.

Martin
Martin,
Didn't realize the amount of smokey-ness that I would taste. Still good strength though. Wine-cask finish does come through.

Jared
Jared,
Like roasting apples on a campfire with a puff pastry on the side. Tastes similar to Teacher’s Highland Cream, which is not surprising given that Teacher’s has a lot of Ardmore in the blend.

Paul,
I posted this for the wrong whisky and can't figure out how to delete it.
Michael
Michael,
Smokiness was a bit overpowering

Brandon
Brandon,
It might have been the smokiness, which I typically don’t mind, but I got hints of rubber in this one.

Amy
Amy,
I really liked the caramel flavor on this one. It can stand on its own, however I think it would be really good in mixed drinks. I think it would be good for someone who is new to Scotch.

Antti
Antti,
It is an outstanding, elegant, Single Malt Scotch Whisky that has an aromatic birth; while a complex life leads to a long & smoky death with notes of fire, tobacco & leather.

Bradley
Bradley,
I normally don’t care much for peaty scotch, but this one was not overdone and was surprisingly smooth. Alexander Murray makes some real good Scotch and I prefer some of the others, but still this one is better than expected.

JOSH
JOSH,
Surprisingly good! The smokey flavor brought back memories of campfires! I'll definitely be adding this to my bar!

Tobacco and leather flavors. Some body and sweetness. Very good.

Michael
Michael,
My first taste of scotch, so I'm giving it an eight but might adjust that later after trying more. Smoky in the beginning, started the tasting neat, but then on the rocks brought out the Vanilla and caramel. Finished with some Coke and tasted some spicy fruity flavors.
Michael
Michael,
After having the 12 year old 2002, gotta say I prefer the Ardmore! Still rating it an 8 though.
Jarrett
Jarrett,
This was a good one, it was Smokey up front but right under it was the sweet speyside flavors

David
David,
Too smoky... not my cup of tea.

Ian
Ian,
Perhaps it is my bias for smoky whiskys, but out of the 9 year old, 12 year, and 15 year, the 9 year was my favorite. It had little bite, and had a delicious smoky aftertaste.

David
David,
Too smoky for my tastes...

Eli
Eli,
Sweet, lightly floral, underlying peat, heat on the finish. A bit boring but not bad
