An artisanal Rye Whiskey, crafted with a lot of patience.

Ever since the good ol’ days of Prohibition, there have been no new artisan distilleries in Northwest Indiana, let alone in Hammond. Then came the 18th Street Distillery, the only operating distillery in the city of Hammond. So, what are they all about? Not rushing and taking cheap shortcuts because of demand, for one thing. Using the finest ingredients and time-honored methods, you can currently try their award-winning range of Spirits from Rye Whiskey, Vodka, Rum, Bourbon, and Gin.

18th Street Distillery Rye Whiskey is crafted from a mash bill of corn, rye, and malted barley. It’s bottled at exactly 100 proof, which allows the flavors of vanilla and cherry to mingle in harmony with the sweet rye spice. This Rye was made with a lot of patience and you can tell when you’re sipping it neat. It does a great job in traditional Whiskey cocktail, too, that were originally made with Rye Whiskey.

Rye sparked the first revolution after the American Independence. It was called the Whiskey Rebellion, and it arose when the government tried to tax Whiskey and enforce the taxation on distillers. The lesson here? Don't mess with a Whiskey drinker's dram.
In 1901, The Hammond Distilling Company was the second largest distillery in the nation, producing 25,000-50,000 gallons of alcohol per day.
Rye - think of it as Bourbon's edgier cousin. It’s known for what many call a spicy or fruity flavor. Rye (distilled from at least 51% Rye) is not on the sweet side and tends to have a spicier body. That’s why the character of a cocktail made from Rye, instead of Bourbon, is drier.
George Washington famously loved his Rye Whiskey. In fact, after he served as the first president of the United States, he returned to his farm at Mount Vernon and started a small Rye distillery of his own.
18th Street Distillery is the first artisan distillery to open since Prohibition in Hammond.
A decade ago there were only 6 brands of Rye Whiskey hailing from Kentucky, nowadays there are more than 50!
